Anti-Rape Condom

I found this as I stumbled across the Internet this afternoon. This is a little grotesque but I thought I would post it as it is relevant to some issues in SPP. This anti-rape condom could prevent rape and help to track the assailant. However, like many other anti-rape and sexual assault products such as mace and a whistle the cost of this measure is placed on the victim.

So I’m not really sure what I think of this yet… a woman would wake up in the morning and put in her handy anti-rape condom, and continue along with her day? I’m trying to imagine the mind set of women who would wear this – constantly thinking about the possibility of being raped? I don’t know, but for me at least I would prefer not to have to wear an anti rape condom and not constantly think about the possibility of being raped and what I can do about it, but rather be assured that society is doing something to stop rapists. This anti-rape condom does not PREVENT rape; the woman is still raped and will still suffer the emotional and physical effects.
This reminds me of the list of things to prevent sexual assault that Alisa shared with us earlier in the semester – that was targeted at the rapist; as really they are the source of the problem. Women do take extra precautions (as not walking in central park at 3 am, carrying mace, etc)… but how far must we go to be assured we will not be raped!?
Also, this completely ignores the fact that men are also raped. How would we prevent the raping of men?!

    Leah,
I agree with your comments completely. This places all the blame on women and in no way is this a fair way to rectify the problem of rape. I just thought this was an interesting idea – given its origin from a woman inventor in South Africa.
